We were commissioned by the Theatre Royal Bath to design a poster for their theatrical performance of Philip Pullman’s ‘His Dark Materials’. They are performing the whole story (3 books worth) over two performances in April 2008. We’ve seen the costume designs and they look awesome, and judging by past YPT/TRB productions the whole thing will be amazing!

Below are my work-in-progress design proofs which were developed and adapted based on feedback from the client. Originally, we were going for a ‘movie poster’ style image featuring the characters from the play. The play wasn’t cast at this point so we couldn’t use photos, so I based the characters on photos of people I imagined had the right look to be the characters.

After proofing, it was evident that the drawn characters weren’t the right style for what they had in mind, so it was decided to try using constellations to portray key symbols and characters.

Then the Theatre brochure size limitations kicked in, so we viciously cropped the image down to a fat banner shape.

The final design, in a range of colours to used across a range of media, from the monthly Theatre Royal brochure to massive 4-sheet posters. Look out for the posters in bus and trains stations across Bath and Bristol this month!

It’s also been featured in it’s full proportioned glory in the Theatre Royal Bath brochures and the egg brochures for the past few months, so you can take home your own…!

I was in the Production of “His Dark Materials” as a ghost in the second part, I loved every minute of it and everyone was really nice and helpful. I loved the design of the posters. They looked really amazing and magical.

Thanks Liv! We would’ve loved to come see the show but we ended up working on other things. Glad you enjoyed it. The YPT always seem to do really great stuff, it’s always great to get to work with them!
